The Night of Sevilla

German Football Museum

Dortmund (DE)

2022

The temporary installation “Die Nacht von Sevilla” is presented in the German Football Museum in Dortmund on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the World Cup thriller between Germany and France, bringing together many of the former protagonists and three generations of visitors. The semi-final of the World Cup in 1982 between the two teams turned out to be a drama that shook both nations and the world. Founding director of the German Football Museum, Manuel Neukirchner, describes the game like a classical five-act-drama in his book “Die Nacht von Sevilla”.
TMS transferred this into the chapters of an artistic media installation.

Visitors are teleported back to the moment of the game by entering a stylised living-room inspired and decorated in the fashion of 80s. Divided into a German and a French side, visitors can change national perspectives on the dramatic scenes, simultaneously becoming part of the scenery. The experience is made particularly authentic by the precisely fitting details and the original audio as game commentaries.

About

The 360° structure of the spacial media experience creates the feeling of the visitors being right in the stadium. This is supported by the dramaturgical staging of several audiovisual layers. The stadium audience as background, the game scenes in the depths and close-up reactions bringing emotions right back to life. The narrative structure of the 17-minute film not only reveals the twists, turns and punchlines of the game, the visitors are also motivated by audio-visual effects to wander around the space and explore. Original exhibits from the game underline the authentic feeling of the “timetravel”. In 6 magnifying glasses, visitors can explore details of the game and discover thoughts going trough the players minds during crucial moments. This football game was not only brought to life, it still generates pure emotion on both sides. The experience lives on and will be remembered thanks to the visitors and reports.
