Courtroom 600: Time Travel

Memorium Nuremberg Trials

Nuremberg (DE)

2022

From 1945 onwards, the criminals of the National Socialist regime were sent to trial (in Courtroom 600) of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice before an international court.

This trial was the foundation of todays international law for crimes against humanity and international war crimes.

In this historical location, the spatial media production "Time Travel Courtroom 600," composed from historic video elements, sound impressions, and a special lighting control allows visitors a unique journey through time.

About

The audiovisual installation is fully automated. TMS transformed the historical courtroom into a virtual space immersing visitors in the sounds and images of the historical events.

The audiovisual staging embraces the courtroom with the help of two semi-transparent projection surfaces layered one behind the other. By this the courtroom appears as a virtual time capsule, staging the precedent case of the Nuremberg Trials.

The material used comes from the Memorium's extensive collection of historical film and photo recordings of the Nuremberg Trials and thus contributes to the authenticity of the staging.

The highlight of the staging is the reconstruction bringing the packed 1945 trial room to life.

This richly detailed experience was achieved through the interplay of 9 camera perspectives, assigning historical actions and figures, to the correct historical location in the courtroom, through an elaborate 1:1 3D reconstruction.
The result is a vivid and eye-catching impression of the process and its spatial location.

Reflections of current events suggest the international law rooting in the Nuremberg Trials are still of great importance today.
