TIME-DYNAMIC MODEL OF SAXONY
The time-dynamic model of Saxony, a large kinetic installation at the State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz (smac), was designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER and developed by TAMSCHICK MEDIA+SPACE in collaboration with MKT and Focus 4. The kinetic landscape model connects the foyer with the three exhibition floors. Every hour, a show starts playing, in which the model moves vertically over the height of the building's open atrium. The innovative film production subtly choreographs the development of Saxony from a natural to a cultural landscape. The sound supports the journey through 300,000 years of history emotionally and atmospherically.
Video, sound and spatial choreography form a narrative unity and a connection to the content of the museum – a memory machine that sends us on a poetic journey, an emotional narrator that demonstrates the cultural and historical development of the country in a multidimensional manner. The floating screen has an overall size of about 6 x 4 metres and consists of five tiles. The tiles are 12mm thick and made of a translucent material, a matt-painted plastic (PETG). The topography hangs from a total of 15 steel cables that are individually controlled by computerised stepper motors. The vertical, flowing and dynamic movements correspond to the film, which is being projected onto the tiles by eight beamers recessed into the ceiling. It moves a vertical distance of about 13 metres.
The model of Saxony also offers an interactive experience to the museum visitors. Between each show, the installation rests in the foyer. Eight touch screen monitors are arranged around the axis of the model, chronologically presenting information on the topics of geology, nature, water, archeology, population, industry, culture and the mobility of Saxony. The map's information can be sent onto the landscape model, thus resulting in a constantly changing topography. This innovative combination of kinetics, film, sound, narration, interaction and participation is absolutely innovative - it was an experiment without precedent.
