ARABIAN JOURNEYS

Dhahran (SA) | 2018

"Arabian Journeys" is a pioneering contribution to one of the most important Arabic museums, which in Saudi Arabia is called "Ithra": cultural encounter. Above all, it’s the elaborate, endless panoramas that are projected onto the all-pervading, dynamically shaped ribbons that connect the museum visitors, enveloping them so that they first encounter each other and then, together, the cultural identity of Saudi Arabia.

In a walk through several stations the exhibition "Arabian Journeys" tells the story of Saudi Arabia. The more than 1,000 m² of exhibition space organically designed by the Lead Agency ATELIER BRÜCKNER conveys Saudi Arabia’s unknown liveliness through the multimedia presentation of TAMSCHICK MEDIA + SPACE. Immersive and interactive, the visitor tours Saudi Arabia over land and under water and feels part of its rich culture, stunning landscapes and unique habitats for flora and fauna. In addition to retrospection and an inventory of the present, this is about the future of Saudi Arabia as an environmentally conscious nation. Active knowledge transfer here is one of the core tasks of the "Arabian Journeys".

The alternation between cinematic immersion and real exhibits, together with a design of the exhibition and interaction pieces that individually adapt to the represented natural spaces, is the strength of the exhibition. Color schemes and floor graphics tailored to the respective topic contribute to the sensory immersion technology.

The backbone of the exhibition is the meandering "Connection Zone", from which five adjoining topic zones open up, bordered by five seamlessly interlocking projection tapes. The topic zones address the visitor's emotion with rousing five-minute narrative loops. Key exhibits at the entrances together with introductory texts set the mood for the multisensory topics. The dialogues between the life-size virtual tour guides Tariq and Ahmed, which the visitors encounter again and again on their hike, additionally arouse interest in the respective journey.

To complete the walk through five topic zones, "Into the Future" focuses on the ways that may lead Saudi Arabia to a prosperous future. TAMSCHICK MEDIA+SPACE together with iart AG generated the whole country as an interactive game. The multimedia production of the game’s face and the film projections form a highlight for the visitors, a holistic, touching spatial experience. The large central media table, the room's main exhibit, acts as the control panel of a cockpit as players experience their rapid free flight across Saudi Arabia. In fifteen scenically choreographed games the up to eight participants again encounter the virtual guides Tariq and Ahmed, and they learn to take on important challenges. At the end of their eventful journey through the past and the present everyone is playfully sensitized to fundamentally important topics such as environmental protection and sustainability, regenerative energy production and future-oriented urban planning.
